WordPress 2.9.2 – Should you Upgrade?

WordPress 2.9.2 was quietly introduced last night to the community as an upgrade option and as always creates the question – should you upgrade to latest version or not?

I upgrade my blog with no issue but before you choose to do so I recommend you read the release notes. It is a fix for a bug that becomes apparent only on blogs with multiple users and ONLY if you trash posts that you don’t want others to see.

If that fits your blog description and you don’t want others to be able to dig through your “Trash” then upgrade is an easy decision but knowing that new release is probably not too far off – it is not mandatory upgrade.

But on side note – it didn’t introduce any issues and with new, Automated Upgrade options we have under Tools->Upgrade, I don’t see why Not To Upgrade!

I also upgraded without problem to 2.9.9. I have many plugins on my blog and this update hasn’t harmed any of them.

  2. I have not upgraded yet for the fact of the problems I was reading on the wordpress site about the upgrade but will most likely be upgrading soon.

  3. Looks like we agree as that is basically what I said yesterday after I saw it and read the release notes.

Much easier to upgrade with the automation so I do it as I get to them.

I prefer to wait few weeks and after this I will install it. I have 2.9.1 and I don’t think that will be more different

  5. Keith Davis says:

My problem is that I upgrade using Cpanel and Cpanel is way behind on upgrades – why is that?
I know that once you upgrade using a non Cpanel method, you can no longer upgrade using Cpanel.

I’ve been thinking about using the WordPress automatic upgrade instead!

    Any thoughts?

      Keith,

I have spoke up against using cPanel Fantastico for WordPress install or upgrades several times and you can find my opinion by searching this blog. I think it will pretty much answer your question.

    • Chris Cobb says:

      Keith,
I have not had any problems with the automatic upgrade except one site of a client had permission problems and it wouldn’t work.

      • TheSpotter says:

        Chris,

Thanks for speaking up “FOR” the upgrade! I do appreciate the different opinions, although I will stick to mine :-)

Every process will have different experience and I agree that good hosts should have Fantastico upgraded in time to be able to upgrade your blog.

      • Keith Davis says:

        Hi Chris
I presume that you mean the WordPress automatic upgrade from the wordpress dashboard.

        Not the fantastico automatic upgrade.

        Am I right?

  6. Vance Sova says:

    Hi Spotter,

Thanks for your Word Press upgrade posts. I find them very helpful and combined with reading your readers comments I feel at ease deciding whether to upgrade or not.

Without this info I’d be afraid to upgrade because of the possible adverse effects on some plug ins that might not work with the new version of WP.

Reading your reply to Keith’s comment will help answer the question I had about using Fantastico to install Word Press.

There are a lot of people who recommend using it but I’ve noticed that some people don’t. I always wanted to find out why but didn’t know where.

I’ll read what you have to say about it on this blog.

  7. Thanks Alex, I’ve come to count on your blog posts and email about the latest updates from WordPress. I’ve been burned by hackers twice for not running the latest version of WordPress. So even though the upgrades like these are not critical I still upgrade. I prefer to deal with a few broken plugins then an entire site messed up and going down because scum hackers caught me running older versions of WordPress. But I like to see your opinion on the matter first so thanks for being WordPress upgrade test subject. :-)

    Hi Alex
Thank you for keeping us up to date re new WP releases. For me, upgrading from 2.8.6 to 2.9.1 seemed to be a big jump with many changes to deal with (for example: some of the plugins not compatible anymore), so I figure it best to upgrade as the new releases come out and deal with whatever right away. As I was wondering what surprises this one held for us non techies, I’m glad to hear this 2.9.2 does not involve any problem so to speak. I appreciate your feedback. I know I can trust it.

I upgraded even though I do not have a need to. The automated option made it a breeze and upgrading did not mess with the plugin and whatever.

Good advice. The last upgrade to 2.9.1 broke my site for a day… my new philosophy is “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”

  11. Hi Alex,

Since the introduction of the automatic update button within WordPress I have always updated on new releases. Must not tempt fate, but I have never had any problems or issues after so doing.

Thanks as always for your posts.

  14. I have been having problems, especially formatting problems on certain themes, ever since I converted to 2.9.

However, since I can’t really go back to 2.8.6, I’ve been converting the 2.9 blogs to 2.9.2 and do not see any difference.

I dread new WP versions now, though, because of the problems caused by 2.9.

    • TheSpotter says:

      Kathleen,

Are you sure it is the WordPress? Have you tried Default theme? Perhaps it is the coding in your custom themes that are not up to the standard, it does happen sometimes.

  15. Beth Parker says:

I upgraded last night and now I am having trouble getting my site at http://www.infobonanza.com to load. Sometimes it will; sometimes it won’t. This affects every page, not just the dashboard although I first noticed it while trying to edit a post.

I don’t know for sure whether the problem was caused by the upgrade, but I am not having issues with any of my other sites loading and they are all on the same hosting account. InfoBonanza is the only one I have updated to 2.9.2.
