WordPress 2.8.5 Released
Unexpectedly I logged in tonight to discover that new version of WordPress is made available and its not WordPress 2.9!
New release is a security hardening branch to help you stay more secure and while I haven’t seen any direct urging notifications on developers blog, it addresses several security issues that exist in your blog and as such – Upgrade Highly Recommended!
As I write this post, my main blog as well as 5 of my Niche Blogs that have different plugins and theme configurations were upgraded with no problems using Automated Upgrade option so I think its safe to say that go ahead and upgrade now!
Just be sure to backup first!

Alex, I just noticed the upgrade too. In the past I used to ignore such things (silly me). It wasn’t until I got bushwhacked by hackers that I finally took these upgrades seriously.
When I say bushwhacked, I mean they really got me good. So, what ever minor inconvenience I have to under go performing an upgrade, it’s a lot less work than tracking down and rebuilding after a severe hack attack.

Yes, being preventive is a lot simpler then fixing security breach.
I don’t understand why they released the new version so quickly after the last update 2 months ago.
I don’t see any changing in this new version. It’s not really necessary to upgrade.

It is security upgrade which includes one “zero day” exploit fix. Failure to upgrade now open your blog to exploit that is already widely discussed on hackers forums and have a script to exploit it.
You can chose not to upgrade but I don’t see why would you – as I found, I seen no issue after upgrading a LOT of blogs.
If really this little upgrade can boost the security level so much i will upgrade it today. I wonder when version 2.9 will come out. Are there any leaks about that? From my point of view there is no sense in making another upgrade to version 2.8 if it isn’t very necessary security matter, so You are right again, this must be important.
i upgraded three of my blog´s too without any problems, but it´s important to backup too, you will know this after you lost your entire blog database! Thanks!

Saw this update Yesterday and the first thing which I did
was Backyp my Db and updated the wordpress. Though wordpress are releasing very quick update..
Great advice Alex on the importance of upgrading. I used to ignore the “little” upgrades until hackers made a mess of my blog. Now I upgrade immediately (after backing up of course). That’s why these upgrades come so often because they’re plugging security holes vs. just a features upgrade. I blogged about my hacked blog nightmare so if anyone reading this is not taking upgrading seriously watch this:

Hi Alex -
You are fortunate if you can do a one click trouble free update. Ususally one or more of my blogs gets a hiccup when I do an upgrade to a newer version. Usually style sheet problems, but sometimes a plugin.

Strange – I rarely have issues upgrading but I also always do a test on non-prod and always make sure to use only properly coded themes and plugins. I generally choose stability over functionality, when I have to.
