Comment Spam Filter Comes To Rescue Akismet

Fighting Comment Spam on a WordPress blog is a never ending battle. Since I provide DoFollow options and use 2 plugins that reward commenters even more: CommentLuv and KeywrodLuv - I get a LOT of comment spam. Ever since I have switched from Spam Karma 2 to Akismet I’ve been testing multiple plugins that will assist me with this work and minimize the load.

Well, looks like I have just found a wining combination!

While there are many plugins that help you with dealing with Comment Spam I’ve had hardest time finding one that works effectively in combination with WP Super Cache and Akismet. And I have tried multitude of option! That is until few days ago, as it appears I have found a current winner…

A few days ago I have installed a great plugin - Simple Spam Filter.

It works quite nicely in combination with Akismet to prevent common Comment Spam. Its simplicity is perhaps its greatest benefit! It doesn’t attempt to second guess what is spam and what is ham. It gives you an opportunity to set some rules (and provides you with nice default settings) such as:

  • Spam Keywords you can specify and continue to add to
  • Common pattern in url’s provided within the comment, for example BB code
  • Number of links in comment to consider it a spam
  • Comment is very similar to already existing comment on your blog - 75% or more which effectively identifies the bots

All options above are configurable through Admin setting interface and allows you to tweak the system to your specific blog. But what is even better - it allows you to integrate reCaptcha into your blog!

I know, I hate it too! I find it hard to guess the words sometimes, annoying and a few more “not very nice” words but one thing I know - IT’S EFFECTIVE! And in case of this integration it is ONLY displayed to commenter if he failed to pass the specified rules above.

This one options help eliminate the False Positives and give people second chance to add comment to your blog! I simply love it!

So, here is my recommendation for now:

If you use WP Super Cache and Akismet - add Simple Spam Filter to your Comment Spam Fighting arsenal! Well worth the time investment.

And if you like the post - do Share It,

I am using another powerful plugin to fight spam - WP Hashcash - in combination with Akismet and CommentLuv. It work wonders - have not seen spam for a long time.

Max - yes, I have used that one before as well :-) Maybe due to the unique combination of plugins I have - it didn’t work too well for me.

Alex, thanks for this information.I just hope that it will go a long way in helping me fight spam.Though my blog is smaller than yours, it is also a victim of spammy comments because I have installed the Commentluv and the Dofollow plugins.

Thanks for the tip. The spam comments I hate the most are the ones that make you second guess whether they are spam. I had one that chided me on something they disagreed about in my post so I had to pull the post up and, of course, there was no relation.

I may try it on your recommendation, thanks. Honestly though, I’ve never had any real issues with just Akismet.

At the moment I only use Akismet, as it works fine for me. I also moderate my comments manually, so that’s probably why I don’t need another plugin to handle the spam. I’ll bookmark this post in case I need it in the future.

    Thanks!

I don’t have any blog spam software on my website, so I get a lot of spam. With my old blog I had thousands of spam comments! It really is sick. If people want to build links to their sites, they should realize spamming doesn’t work, and that they should actively contribute to blogs. Congratulations on finding the winning combination!

It’s unfortunate that so many tools are needed just to block spam. I wonder what it feels like to be a spammer… I can’t imagine it is a good feeling.

Despite all spam filters in place, I still got ocassional spam comments. They are in gray area (spammers getting smarter), but you can see almost immediately that’s spam. I don’t hesitate for a second to delete such comments. Alex, how about a link that’s still coming of spam site? I heard Google penalizing linked site if a link is coming from questionnable sites.

    Max,

I can only highly recommend that you go and get StomperNet2. Its free and you only pay for shipping and it is worth its weight in Gold. It has already turned a few SEO “facts” as I knew them around and more to come. It is the best investment you can make into your SEO knowledge right now.

According to them - you can’t control a link coming from spamy site - unless you actively participate in it.
