Hi Alex, brilliant blog, especially to a newbie who uses hostgator and has therefore been ( almost ) seduced by the easy access to a Wordpress site via their Fantastico button sitting there all invitingly on the cPanel. I read all the way down this thread, and it seems to me that there is an 'elephant-in-the-room' type of theme. A couple of contributors referred to having used Fantastico to get the whole Wordpress installation on the road, but then went on to leave F. behind and tweak their sites in a more hands-on sophisticated way after that. If this is actually possible, then it would have the greatest possible interest to a newbie like myself, and is so interesting that i would jump to read your thoughts and/or tips on this idea. I apologise in advance if i missed prior reference to this theme, but if it is a goer, then your criticisms of people using Fantastico in the direction of it not enabling upgrades later, are in direct contradiction to the posters who suggest using their own skills AFTER using Fantastico to get started ?
Thanks again for a thought-provoking read,
paul.

Lubi,

Thank you for comment. My opinion hasn't changed. I still don't recommend to use Fantastico for same reasons.

Hi Spotter,

Like most people spotted your blog trying to figure out if I should use Fantastico or not. I have built a few websites in the past, some with WP auto-install, some with manual, depending on the customer's hosting providers.

I am growing, and purchased a reseller account that comes with Fantastico De-Luxe. I have installed WP on one of the projects without problems, but then wanted to password protect the home folder during the build and apparently cannot do this with Fantastico Frontpage bla bla blas. I try and use as few plug-ins as possible and installing one just to password protect the site made me think, what other limitations can come from this, and ultimately led me here.

I can see that the post is few years old, are you still standing firmly by your opinion, have there been any developments? It would certainly make my life easier for the first hour of the project, but I would rather waste a couple and then save some time pulling my hair out in the future. I am a relative newbie still, but knowledge is power man, for sure so I try and understand everything that required and supplemental.

Your update would be appreciated.

Thanks
Lubi

The latest version of wordpress has more advanced features for upgrading wordpress core and plugings.

Two days back when new update for wordpress version3 has released and for some plugins. I wonders how simple i can upgrade all plugins and default core together with just one click.

Now a days, I think no one will use fantastico updater for updating wordpress due to the limitations of it. Still Someone may be using it and your post will help them to understand the need of using default wordpress update function than fantastico wordpress updater.

There's also a great danger installing Wordpress through Fantastico for the clueless (including me) until a while ago that I discovered something.

The installation makes it easy that all wp-config.php authentication unique keys are all the same across the cpanel wordpress installation in any domain you installing WP and this even up to latest version (2.9.2)

This is why most WP blogs get spammed no matter what captcha you built into it. This is not WP weakness. It is the fantastico.

Right now, I'm changing all my blogs with new authentication keys. I will make a video of this later on my blog.

Thanks Stuart,

The new way to do an upgrade is also simple and it works, one provided by WordPress itself.

I abandoned using Fantastico after the first similar read several years ago. I don't understand everyones issues with FTP. All you have to do is bring in the new build in zipped form and unpack it on the server. I take double precautions and drag all my working directories into a folder while I do this and yes it takes my site down for 10 minutes. After I unzip it, I copy the correct folders back onto the root and I'm up. This also allows me to have my last good known files safely tucked away should I have an issue later.

Bottom line on this great post, how can you be enthusiastic about a great product if the internal working of it are foreign to you? I've escaped disasters many times by being forced to learn.

Good job here.
