With so much focus on search engine optimization as of late, it comes as no surprise that many website owners tend to forget some of the basics when they are looking at some of the more advanced concepts when it comes to search engine optimization. There are actually a few things that you can do, that many website owners forget, that can have a lasting and profound impact on your search engine optimization. If you forget them, and add them at a later date, you will likely be kicking yourself as you watch your rankings rise rapidly. A few of the things that you need to be doing to your website in order to maintain your rankings and even improve upon them include;

Sitemap

One of the most important aspects of optimizing your website for the search engines, is having a readable site map. Unfortunately, many websites forget to add this, or simply do not know that it is required in order to have solid rankings. These allow Google to better crawl your website, and get a good idea of exactly where all of the pages within your website or. In forgoing one, you are going to find that some of your pages will not be as easily index or crawled by the company, meaning that your rankings could take a dive as a result. If you are utilizing a content management system such as WordPress, there are multiple plug-ins that you can use in order to have the website generate its own site map itself. Make sure that you had a site map for better crawling, better indexing, and a better time overall.

    How exactly does having an email list (or doing list-building) helps with search engine rankings?

    Yes, sitemaps are essential, and so is optimizing your images. But it is equally important (if not more so) to optimize your content – tags, meta info, keywords… the whole works.

    Thanks, these are good – and thorough – tips. I think most site owners are coming to the realization (if they haven’t already) – that merely inserting keywords into their text will probably not get them the ranking results they are hoping for. Optimizing images is something that can tend to be overlooked and it’s good that you mention it here. Instead of making graphics an afterthought, we should remember that they are a key component of our site’s content and can be yet another tool to help with indexing.
