Yes, you are right about google knowing trends of our traffic(visitors on our sites) more than we will ever know. specially with all the acquisitions, launches and enhancements. After reading this article I think of SEO differently now and wonder whether SEO has become lot more difficult or quite a bit easier than it used to be?

Google is having much changes in their business and it'll effect the entire internet + blogsphere. Google is moving all feedburner feeds in google and they have changed a lot of things in their PR calculation system. I think google is now in favor of link selling and taking much longer time for each PR update. What ever you do google, don't just do something stupid!
