Search Engine Ranking Factors Cheatsheet

At the end it all comes down to one thing – Targeted Traffic! But how you get there can be quite different and in my personal experience proper Search Engine Optimization is one of the simplest ways to get your own UNFAIR SHARE of the visitors.

Problem is – there are just as many experts as there are opinions on what need to be done in order to rank well and win the page rank war. And if you start to listen to them one-by-one you will soon start running in circles.

Luckily, guys at SEOMoz have compiled a Search Engine Ranking Factors Cheat sheet that combines the answers from quite a few industry recognized SEO experts and presented it in a simple to understand and follow format. Bookmark and print it!

Trends will come and go. What works this week may not work next week. I don’t try to fool the search engines, I just give them what they want… original content.

Well dennisb, I do think they left out the importance of fresh and unique content, but we can’t just ignore the effect of external backlinks and anchor text either!

Caffeine seems to be moving away from domain authority and more toward individual URL authority signals (more dampening?) but I think the basic model for search recognition has stayed more or less intact for a while.

Agree with John. I also give much importance to external backlinks and anchor text either! Anyway it is the number1 ranking factor according to Cheat sheet. Quality content is always important but without quality backlinks we can’t rank well in search engine.

Thanks Alex for referring to great valuable content.

  6. Thanks for the heads-up on this one, Alex – I hadn’t run across it yet!

While social networking and Web 2.0 marketing is providing more immediate traffic for most online marketers, there’s no denying that effective SEO should always be a part of any long-term success strategy online.

And anyone who honestly thinks unique content alone is the key to SEO & search engine traffic should check the traffic stats of article directories, since most have ZERO unique content on their sites but still get heavy traffic from the engines.

The days when any one traffic strategy could propell a site to success are well behind us now. It takes an integrated approach and ongoing efforts to stand out online these days, and SEO – from keyword-laden domain names to effective backlink campaigns – is an important component of every online professional’s marketing mix.

  7. Yes, this is a pretty useful “cheat sheet”. Interesting that the Top 3 ranking factors are all EXTERNAL.

I have actually seen pages with virtually no content on them rank pretty well simply because of either external factors, or the domain name happened to exactly match the keywords.

    Hi
i completely agree with Doug here as no single activity will work to put you on the top of search engines. That is why i always believe that SEO (combination of all exercises on internet) is must for any website.

  9. Pat says:

I agree with the first poster to an extent. In the end, all you can really do is write good, quality content. Though there are ways to help actually maximize your quality, original content.
