Does Article Marketing Still Work?

It wasn’t too long ago when article marketing was the biggest and best way to get your site noticed on the Internet. You could drive hordes of traffic to your site in very little time and start making sales immediately. As with everything, times have changed on the Internet and article marketing has taken on a new life of its own.

Gone are the days when you could simply throw an article together, send it into Ezinearticles or Go Articles and then expect to see traffic. There are still ways to make a lot of money and effectively market your site using article marketing, but it’s not by tossing together a quick word salad and then sending it off to the directories.

Article syndication

This is a part of article marketing that has worked remarkably in the past, continues to work just as well now and will definitely continue to be effective in the future. This is human controlled marketing where you write an over-the-top article that people pick up from a directory to use. There are major authority Internet sites that are always looking for great articles that they can use on their sites, in their newsletters etc.

When your article gets picked up the resource box must stay intact. This means that thousands of people will see your article and then hopefully click on your link if you have written a compelling article. Humans decide whether they can use your article or not to distribute to their sometimes massive mailing lists and you get to piggyback on this list. It’s a great way to do business and no, it’s not going to be going anywhere soon.

This is not a trend that Google is going to pick up on and then hammer in its next update. This involves business between a real webmaster and a person that has written a striking article. This is a long-lasting building model that you can use over and over again to help develop your website.

If you can’t write this type of article it is worth the money to hire a writer that is capable of handling this type of quality content. You’ll have to pay good money to get an article that is worth syndication but it will be money very well spent.

Instead of hiring a writer to spit out horrible and useless content that you can add to directories where it will probably never be seen or used, take the money you were going to invest in 10 articles and put it into one that is worth syndication. This is the only way to go about article marketing these days.

Great post. While traditional article marketing is as good as gone, syndication is like an evolved, better version of it. Almost like Article Marketing 2.0.

You mentioned Ezine and GoArticles as examples of article marketing, can you give examples of the best article syndication websites/resources out there right now? And what are some of the best practices for syndication?

I agree that the traditional article marketing is dead. With each release of Google’s algorithm (most notably Penguin), content farms are getting lower and lower rankings. Even a couple of years ago, you would be wasting your time to post to more then a handful of high quality sites.

Anything that’s done in moderation with syndication will only help. I don’t see Google going after this as it’s not something to game the system but to provide content to users.

I’ve never really believed in article submission to build traffic, especially with people spinning articles 500 times to the point where it’s hardly legible. Article syndication on the other hand sounds like it could work, but I suppose it also depends on the type of business you are in.

Hmm lets see. BMR is dead. Its only a matter of time before Ezine and the other bite the dust. Id say aricle marketing is pretty much dead! The good news is that there are good alternatives available out there: syndication is one (as you’ve mentioned). But for me, one of the best, safest and Google-friendly alternative to article marketing is guest blogging and guest posting.

It doesn’t look like Sharon is responding to the comments on here, but I wanted to offer a little bit different viewpoint on the subject anyway.

She mentions that article syndication is still effective and will probably remain so. The type of syndication she is referring to is when one of your articles gets republished on lots of other websites or republished on one or two more authoritative sites.

Her experience must be a bit different than mine because I don’t tend to get my articles picked up by really authoritative sites. Maybe that says something about my quality. I hope not. Rather, I tend to see low quality sites picking up these articles and republishing them.

If a site is looking toward article directories for its content, how high quality can that site really be? I really doubt there are that many authoritative websites out there who would actually grab an article from an article directory and republish it.

So I wouldn’t focus on syndication if you are looking for higher quality links. It is a way to get a bunch of lower quality links though.

Article directories can be used a little bit differently though. If you take the time to look around, you can find article directories that have some authority. Then you can get one article published on that site and make sure it gets a little link juice. That creates one good backlink to your site from a unique domain which should be your primary goal with an article anyway. At least that is how I do it and it works really well for getting sites to rank. Yes, even these lowly article directories still work well for getting other pages on other sites to rank.
