Blogging is one of the most popular ways of making money online. Basically, a blog is a personal website that contains commentaries and opinions including information on highly specific niches such as starting a small business, home and interior design, finding a job and easy weight loss regimen to name a few.
Not everyone can achieve success in the blogging world. In fact, more than 90% of blogs over the Internet do not earn substantial revenues to even cover hosting and domain fees. Success in the field of blogging remains elusive and requires a lot of patience and dedication. Moreover, it is more likely that those who do not succeed in the blogging world are those who have committed these simple mistakes that are preventing their blogs from taking off.
Reason 1: Poor Keywords
Insufficient or worst lack of keyword research is one of the biggest reasons why most blogs fail to earn revenues. Money is lost or gained by those who understand how search results affect the productivity of your blog. Effective SEO strategies call for proper keyword research to achieve maximum search engine results.
Reason 2: Low quality website content
Remember that you’re working with a blog and its main focus should always be to provide information for your followers. Low quality web content is another major reason why many blogs fail. With recent changes such as Google’s Panda Update, the need for quality was further emphasized. Web content should be full of insights, grammatically and factually correct and should have the ability to entertain and engage readers.
Reason 3: Ineffective marketing techniques
Ineffective marketing techniques can really spell the difference between success and failure in blogging. The Internet itself has provided numerous platforms from where you can market your blog, so there isn’t any issue with marketing.
Marketing techniques that are popular in the Internet include article marketing through directories like Build My Rank and Ezine and social media marketing through sites like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.
Reason 4: Your blog doesn’t have a niche market
Not having a niche market can be detrimental to your blogging career. Having a niche market means that there are people who are always willing to listen or read your work – niche market are the grassroots foundation of successful bloggers.
Reason 5: You’re only relying to one stream of income
Relying only to a single source of income can also be one reason why you’re not earning money from your blog. Without a doubt, Google AdSense is the most popular and most hassle-free way of generating income from your blog.
Unfortunately, you’ll need a lot of traffic in order to really squeeze earnings from your blog. Apart from Google AdSense, you can also earn money from your blog by offering ad spaces to private firms or by selling small downloadable items like eBooks, software and CDs and DVDs.
Reason 6: Poor placements of advertising banners
The poor placing of advertising banners in your blog might also be one major reason why you’re not earning from your blogging efforts. Play and experiment with your blog’s layout to find out the most profitable placement of advertisements.

Suzzane Edwards is a financial advisor and currently works as a consultant for small businesses. When she’s not writing for Selling Gold for Cash and Cash for Gold Jewelry , she could be found blogging about simple tips on how people could take advantage of the internet’s numerous business opportunities.
Suzzane has hit on some really good points here. Of the five reasons she gives, I think I have the most problems with number two. It is just hard to keep coming up with good content for my blogs.
After I write a few articles, I just run out of steam and don’t know where to go from there. I know there are several different ways to obtain content. All either require time or money and sometimes it just seems I am out of both.
Well apparently I can’t count either. Seems Suzzane gave six reasons not five.
Perhaps another one is not understanding how Google works and what it looks for to drive organic traffic to your site.
These are some great tips, Alex. I’m fairly certain my ads have some bad placement. I’ve been wanting to hire a freelance edsigner to fix up my page.
I think you are forgetting patience, it takes time to build enough traffic to make any money even if you have a great site with good content. Nothing is instant in this game.
Matt, you bring up a great point. Too many people believe it can happen overnight, and most of the advertising on the Internet makes people believe that.
Suzzane, this article has so many interesting points! I am struggling to make some money from my blog and… well, I’m not making money from it, where’s the reason? studying your article I’m understanding a lot about the possible reasons, so, thanks!
how do i decide whether there is a niche or not?
I mean, I am pretty sure that the niche does exist, but the numbers don’t always show the same
You do keyword research.
All excellent points! But I think the biggest factors come down to quality of content, niche selection and promotion.
It’s best to find something you’re passionate about AND can be monetized in some way. Too many people focus on the passion but fail to see if there’s a viable market for that passion.
Also very important is the promotion aspect (AKA link building through guest posting, etc). This is a critical key that most people aren’t patient enough to do and/or stick with over time to see results.
What I love about blogging is the way it mimics ‘right action’ in life.
If you have patience, work hard, be prepared to learn whatever is necessary, network and give of yourself and be prepared to accept and learn form prior mistakes- you’ll make it a success.
Sweet!
“Not having a niche market can be detrimental to your blogging career” and in my opinion it is a common problem. Bloggers often think that they will have a blog “for everyone”, but that’s not an effective way to make money in internet.
