Gail,

Thanks for response. There is a difference between comments that add to conversation and those that are nothing but blatant spam. I agree that many comments are attracted ONLY because they want a backlink. I simply make a statement that those interested in getting link should at least work for it :-)

Highly entertaining link bait title there. ROFLOL about the thought of bloggers who understand the bigger picture of how allowing commentators to add links to their businesses and blogs can keep them from closing their doors being "desperate".

I know this is not common knowledge so I hope anyone who doesn't know why some bloggers (myself included) would encourage business owners and even the offshore workers they hire to leave quality comments will read the post I've shared in CommentLuv.

Thanks Keith,

I know what you mean. Anytime I start new blog I run into same issues, even when content is not created by me :-) I do, even on this blog often approve comments that are "borderline" simply because quite often they are ligit. Obvious spam gets appropriate treatment without second thought :-)

Hi Spotter
Tempting to approve those rubbish comments when you have worked so hard on a post.. just about sums it up.
When I go through my spam, some comments are obviously spam but some are borderline... so I ask my wife what she thinks, and she always says SPAM. Good to have a second opinion.

I think that great content and eye catching graphics plus a catchy title get people to read posts and CommentLuv gives them a reason to comment.
I've not initiated Dofollow yet... still thinking about it.

I have just installed commentluv. Hopefully I'll see some feedback from it. Currently I post my blogs on facebook mypspace and twitter but I don't get many comment. Most of the people just comment on the blog on the facebook post.

I'm currently just using Akismet on my blog for spam protection and I was wondering why you choose to use the other plugin as well. I haven't yet seen a comment get tagged incorrectly by Akismet so I would just like some advice from a more experienced Wordpress user.

Also, for those who have a bit more experience using or tweaking a plugins or WordPress itself, or know a determined topic well, can write about it and encourage questions. I think writing plugin reviews and WordPress walk-throughs are a great way to get people coming and commenting. It's great to see that some bloggers, like Alex take their time to reply to other people's comments on the article page.

Thanks, Alex. I just discovered your blog, and there is a lot of great stuff here. I particularly liked the part about how to reward commenters and appreciate the link to Comment Relish. I am going to try that out with one of my blogs. I'll keep reading and see what other useful tips I can pick up. Thanks!

Sometimes the spam comment sounds so real too!

When I first started getting them on my blog, I'd really wonder for a few seconds if it's a spam comment or not.

Here is how I look at it… you start a new blog and are excited for people to comment. Relate this to being a young boy starting his teen years. As the young boy you are excited to meet your first girl. Well one day a young girl asks the boy to kiss her. What does he say? OF COURSE HE DOES. It’s his first girl and he probably doesn’t care what she’s going to be when she grows up, her morals and all the other stuff that becomes important later in life. He doesn’t care about any of that because of the chemicals in his body telling him to go for it! Relate this to your blog. You have all the young boy chemicals in your head telling you to accept it. DON’T! You will gain more respect and be rewarded in the future for not allowing spam messages on your blog. Anyway, that’s my take on the whole commenting on blog.
