Spam has been such an issue for me - over 10000 spam comments this year! It takes so much time to go through them all, especially ones that seem like they are legitimate. But having several blogs its pretty easy for me to spot someone who's copying and pasting. I have a lot of words in my filters list too. I had to put the word "handbag" thanks to one rather stupid spammer. who was leaving me 10 comments a day, all different addresses, names - some comments obviously duplicate. I think my dofollow is 5 approved comments now also, just in case someone slips through. I was tempted to remove keyword luv alltogether, but i do like rewarding bloggers who aren't jerks. Clement, actually – I’m just automating the process. Filters I add not modified too often – ONLY when someone consistently spams me. I try not to touch IP addresses due to the NAT issue you mention.

I’m for automation, not adding new dimensions to the process. I like it simple.

I see that you are taking the war against spam to a new dimension altogether. But I have a question. You say that if you see someone being an idiot on your blog more than 3 times - his domain or IP gets promptly added to the spam filter list. Considering the fact that many networks use Network Address Translation (NAT) where the whole net has one public IP address behind which there are thousands of private IP addresses. Don't you think that by blocking the IP addresses you will be blocking thousands of legitimate readers just because of one idiot? Secondly, most networks use DHCP. Don't you think it will be difficult to track the spammer in such situations? I am thinking aloud, maybe I will learn something from you, Alex and the other readers of this blog.
