Beat Writers Block Once And For All

Oh my, it finally happened! While I swore that I would never succumb to this lowly feeling of despair and commiseration, the day arrived when it did, regardless of my resolve. It hit me. Writers block. Gasp. Shock. Horror.
Where to now. What to do. At the time I didn’t know. Nor did I really care because the longer I tried to come up with a suitable post idea, the worse my brain acted. It was like I was walking inside my brain trying to peek around corners. And every time I managed to turn a corner, my mind was already ahead on the next.
So I walked away.
Then suddenly it hit me like a twelve ton truck. An idea. A flicker of hope. Quick, write it down before the fleeting though disappears forever into the darkness of the mind…
In hindsight I have to say it isn’t as bad as it looks. Writers block is a common phenomena with bloggers far and wide. We all catch that annoying “lack of inspiration” at some stage in our blogging life. Luckily there are many ways to counteract this. We can feed our brain more inspiration that will help to trigger new ideas we can write about.
Walking away from my laptop helped me and is often the best and fastest way to re-invigorate your brain cells. But there are other things we can do. Here is a list of ideas:
- watch a movie
- read a book
- go for a walk
- sleep
- meditate
- get creative with paint
- read the newspaper
- read your RSS feeds
- visit your favorite blogs
- phone a friend
- relax
- daydream
- journal
- do nothing
- immerse yourself into blog comments
- visit a forum
- read online articles
- ad your own idea
Any of these methods work to get back into creativity mode. How do I know. I tried them all throughout the time I have been blogging. With an average of 6 blog posts on different platforms every day it is only too normal to hit that threaded wall once in a while. Not to worry though, it happens to the best of us and life just goes on.
Maybe you have your own methods on what you do when writers block hits you? Please share them with us so we can all benefit.

Another great way to beat writers block is to simply search for your niche in Google News and see what’s the latest and greatest developments. Sometimes you’ll become quite inspired (for example, I just read at QuickOnlineTips.com that Twitter can now be used to turn on and off lights. If I had a blog about, oh, hmmm, raising clams in my bathtub, I could neatly segue from that to “My Ideal Invention - Using Twitter To Tell Me When My Clams Need a Fresh Bath.”
It’s amazing with what the mind will come up once you give yourself permission to be quite silly.
Enjoy, Barbara

@ Barbara: LOL, what a great idea. Loved your clam bathing idea. Whatever is next?
I didn’t know that about Twitter. Some wonderful and magical things are possible thanks to the Internet these days.

There are tons of ways to find good ideas…emails, other blogs (in and out of your niche), news sites, a you mentioned above, etc.
My best advice - when you have extra time here and there, you should *collect* ideas…creating yourself a “post arsenal”. Eventually you could easily have hundreds of posts ready to go at a moments notice

Writers block seems to be one of the top killers of blogs, up there with lack of traffic, loss of motivation, and no money made. I hate it when it happens to me.
I talk to fellow bloggers to try and alleviate my writers block, and it generally helps. That’s where I get some great post ideas.
