Comment Spam Stats And Notes

Comment Spam on WordPress blogs is a HUGE issue, especially once your blog gets some momentum and ranking, like it or not but it is a fact of our daily life as bloggers. I have personally battled comment spam problem and described it on my blog several times.

My current solution – Intense Debate plugin implementation seem to work fairly well but it seem to have a few drawbacks, one of the more unpleasant one – it seem to auto-delete some comments without me EVER seeing them. It uses Akismet to do comment spam filtering and obviously uses its database to determine what has to be deleted, so anyone unable to comment on my blog – I recommend you check Akismet for being blacklisted.

On my part – I promise that I NEVER delete comments that provided on this blog, as long as they follow Commenting Guidelines I provide right below comment form, be it through Intense Debate or regular WP Comment Form provided for browsers with javascript disabled.  But here are some stats to help you understand the extend of the problem…

For Those About To Spam, I Salute You!

I have to admit, I have a Love/Hate relationship with spammers on my blog:

  • I Hate the time and effort that goes to waste to deal with them
  • I Love the inspiration they provide me with to constantly evolve the methods of dealing with them and also Content I create on the topic

It seems that no matter how solid of a protection we put in place – it only works for a while and then we begin to see an influx of comments filled with bunch of BS that supposed to make me “feel good and approve their crap”.

Battling Foreign Langage Comment Spam

Here I go again! Talking about Fighting Comment SPAM on the blog and how to deal with never-ending stream of attempts to sneak one in! But this time I want to discuss something that I have seen increase lately, maybe just on my blog but still quite annoying:

Foreign Language Comment Spam

Because of the plugins I have already implemented on my blog – automated comment spam is non-existent but I still get a few comments, manually submitted that need my attention, evaluation and finally determination if they should be approved.

WORD OF WARNING TO SPAMMERS: I can click “SPAM” button a lot faster than you can type your comment!

But I have to admit, when a comment comes from someone not native English Speaking and links back to a NON-English site – it is sometimes not very obvious if it is spam or valid comment by someone who doesn’t have a solid grasp of English.
