You mentioned junk sites that rank well but are badly written - I believe Google is now trying to 'clean up' the quality of the landing pages that their adwords point to for just that reason. They may do the same for organic listings at some point. While they are going about it in a heavy handed way (permanent bans on all ads forever), at least they are striking a blow for better quality internet. Now if someone could just eliminate the spam I get every day in my inbox...or at least write it better so I'd be educated and entertained while getting pitched for 'super duper wate loss/phat phighter/belly buster tablets'! I agree, content is king, however, links are becoming as powerful if not more powerful then content. There is a lot of great content out there that may never rank in the serps, but a lot of bad content does rank because it was promoted and harnessed lots of links. Since the latter is a lot cheaper I think we can safely assume that everyone should focus on content if they want to make money.
