Some years ago, most made themselves blogs for the sake of writing and sharing... then things evolved towards:let's make a buck out of it... then let's make some real money, and we started to invest in SEO and marketing and in this rush for gold, some forgot about the pleasure of writing and sharing (you are not included here, fortunately). Now you find out that you even need a lawyer to protect yourself. It is not fair or maybe I am just nostalgic after art for art's sake. I must agree with all the other comments that say this is not real protection. If you go and ask protection from a scam you lost money in they shake their heads: We're sorry, we can not trace them, Sorry, they are from some forgotten island, sorry out of our jurisdiction and so on. I still live in a country from Middle Ages, with webmasters selling what they don't have and hacking the NASA and Pentagon sites... Nice, isn't it?

Joe, thanks for the input.

While I agree with many things you say I request that we remain polite in conversation. At least on my blog.

You don't see this as government meddling in business. You see it as government attempting to protect the consumer from scam artists and con men…including people who don’t necessarily see themselves as scam artists and con men ??

Are you serious? The government can't do anything right, look at the state of health care, many underlying issues there. Anything they touch is pretty much going to be a disaster, they can barely handle the important issues let alone meddle in how much someone makes and pays taxes etc..

Ever heard of buyer beware? It your responsibility to do the research in a product if possible, If you are over the age of 18 one should and I stress should be adult enough to realize different things will or wont work for different individuals, just because someone makes money on a product doesn't mean they should be penalized. If the user who buys something and let's just say its a way to make extra money from home and it didn't work for the buyer in question that person who they bought it from is a scam artist? I don't think so. Its thinking like this that is what morons in the world today want to sue someone for anything and every thing. If that person who bought the product didn't make money or see results its the product creators fault? I don't think so but sure if the product pure and simple doesn't work that's a whole other issue but in this example if the buyer expects to make money by sitting on their butt and doing nothing and they still think they are scammed well then that's the persons idiotic mindset.

The same goes for you see ice on a sidewalk in a business but yet you still slip and hurt yourself. That's kind of a gray area its a 50 50 where, sure you should watch where your going and avoid the ice if you can but at the same time it is still the business owners responsibility to tend to the ice.

It is people like you who probabbly prompted the FTC with these stupid penalties.

Hi Alex,

I just wanted to say 'thanks' for recommending the legal web forms generator.

I picked up a copy yesterday via your link and it was just what I was looking for - really comprehensive and dead easy to use.

Thanks again,

Hey Alex,

I must agree with the other comments that the FTC is not attacking bloggers. Everyone got all up in arms without really even understanding what is going on. People need to focus on running their online business/blogs with integrity and providing information that will help people and they won't have to worry about the FTC. The FTC is a reactionary agency they only act when consumers complain and that is what happened here. There are a lot of shoddy folks out there who make things bad for the rest of us. I'm mad at them, not the FTC. As to why this only affect the U.S. bloggers that's because FTC is a U.S. based agency they can't do anything outside of the U.S. But a lot of countries who do nothing become haven for scam artists and that's why a lot of affiliate programs won't even accept affiliates/bloggers from certain countries because they won't protect their consumers and make it a headache for honest merchants.

Ok, I think they will not focus on average bloggers, as the spotter said, they will pick some big fish and people will be scared. I dont think this will help the internet progress at all. How sad.

Most regulations just make it worse for the consumer. Think about realestate and mortgages. The amount of paperwork one has to go through is enormous. Most of it is all CYA stuff for them and doesn't protect you. A few years ago when we were signing our title documents, I read every word. The people at the title company were visible frustrated. They were hoping for a 5-min appt and I was there well over an hour. 90% of the material offered me not protection at all.
