Google Text Ad Impact On Blog Earning

A misconception exists that Google Text Ad, or as it is more known AdSense, is bad for you blog earning! I think we absolutely MUST clear this mistaken misconception especially for people who are just joining the ranks of bloggers.
Blame the economy or rising awareness of the tools available to people but blogging to make money is becoming increasingly popular and people are on constant look out for the information to help them increase the potential, maximize the opportunity and actually become that 5% of the bloggers who succeed of getting a bit of extra from their blogs.
And while I don’t implement Google AdSense on this blog – there is a good reason behind it and I want to explain in detail “the why” and “the how”!
Did Google Text Ad Lost Its Usefulness?
I’m seeing multiple bloggers post about removing the AdSense from their blogs all together due to multitude of factors. And while I don’t even use it on this blog I believe that Google Text Ads are one of the best and simplest ways to do at least couple things:
- Monetize your Niche Blog using set and forget option
- Evaluate profit potential of the Niche you picked
In fact my partner and I use AdSense extensively on Niche blogs as it helps us to see if the Niche we got into and did a quick research on actually has a potential to deliver. When you do it enough times you can actually see how some Niche’s deliver results that far superseding others and becomes a good indicator if we should spend time on developing that niche or simply let it run its course on autopilot!
And AdSense can deliver a nice chunk of change, at the very least it will always cover your hosting expenses, even if you only put marginal effort!
You can maximize the blog earning potential via AdSense by implementing a few very small tweaks:
- Minimize the number of ads but place them into locations that generate most clicks. Generally left top corner within content is superb location and top right corner of your blog (think sidebar) should get some attention. Less Ads Shown with same number of Clicks – higher CTR and as such higher earnings for you!
- Blend your ads into content. Use same colors as your blog theme uses for text, url, etc. I know everyone tells you it needs to be done but that is because it works! Plain and simple.
- Implement Section targeting. While there are plugins available for you to implement section targeting in WordPress – one of the simplest ways to do it is by inserting code into your theme files.
Google Section Ad Targeting allows you to tell Google Which Content should be evaluated for relevancy of the ads. This allows you to pull MOST relevant ads that greatly increase your Click Through Rate (CTR) and as such your earning.
Simply edit following files of your theme: single.php, index.php, page.php, archive.php. Your theme might have more template files responcible for controlling content but I take into account most common.
Insert section targeting before and after PHP code responcible for showing content:
<?php the_content(); ?>So it looks like this:
<!-- google_ad_section_start --> <?php the_content(); ?> <!-- google_ad_section_end -->
Code above implies just the most common theme and while yours might be slightly different – just find the code responcible for displaying content and wrap it into Google Ad Section tags.
Should AdSense Be Part Of Every Blog Earning Strategy?
Absolutely Not!
In fact I don’t even use it on this blog and I do it quite intentionally. I work hard on creating content that will pull readers in and help people. I work hard on getting new visitors and inviting my previous readers to revisit my blog and I’m not willing to send my visitors away in exchange for a few cents that Google will provide me for text ad click!
Plain and Simple – My Goal Doesn’t Include AdSense Monetization
Blog, just like any other site should be designed to help you accomplish your own MOST DESIRABLE ACTION, guide your visitors gently toward that action by placing it into relevant location and even asking for it.
But first you have to decide what your goals are. I have covered the idea in 2 blogging webinars you can watch and will not repeat myself.
And yes, earning via AdSense can be one of the goals and should be implemented then!
If it fits your personal Blog Earning strategy – Google Text Ad Should Be Implemented

Adsense is indeed a good source of a little income. Though sometimes, it is also annoying. Like for example, I tried to implement my site to have adsense as one of the sources of income. My blog is more like a religious blog and my problem is that I find it a little annoying to have ads posted on my site which directly contradicts to what I am teaching. Grrr… that’s the only thing I don’t like with adsense.
Recently however, I just found out about “Chitika”. It has a feature that only visitors to your site that comes from search engines will see the ads which make it seems to be a part of your site encouraging your visitor to click on it. And on the top it says; “You searched for “keyword”. And I really found it to be very helpful and a little faster in generating income than adsense.
That’s just an additional info to your other readers.
Thanks for this post Alex!!!

Vince, thanks for sharing, that is why I made that statement that its not for everyone! AdSense is great, IF it fits your needs! I just didn’t want people new to blogging ignore it due to misguided advice!
Vince, there are plugins available that will let you insert your adsense code, and then only show ads to people brought to your site via the search engines.
Sire´s last blog ..The Argument For Paid Reviews
I have used Google Adsense on a number of sites. I think it comes down to the niche that you are in. Adsense has worked great for me on some blogs and not some much on others. On the blogs that it is not working so well i might give Chitika a try and see how it goes. Thanks for the info.
Hi, Alex!!
As always Great Post.
I’ve Been trying to implement the 2 suggestion you mention to increase my adsense revenue. However as Vince said sometime is annoying and frustating because I’m having just a litlle amount of page impression, no CTR at all and my income in 3 long month has been just US$12.00., Despite I’m No. 1 for a couple of keywords on a couple of blogs.
Now could you explain a little more your 3rd opting. I could quite understand what you mention about Implement Section targeting.
Could you tell me your expertise about the site Chiitika mention above?

It doesn’t matter if you are number one or not on Google if niche you picked has no people searching for it. That is why I always stress importance of research before creating blog. And if there are people interested – how do you drive traffic? Do you do it enough? You just said yourself you don’t get enough impressions so I would guess you need more traffic. I would concentrate on it first.
Section targeting is already explained – not sure what else needed. You simply tell Google which portion of your blog should be scanned for ad relevance, that is it – implementation details included. I don’t use Chitika so can’t help you there, sorry.
Your reply to the first comment really made me think. I have a niche site that gets little adsense revenue but also gets little traffic. I have not spent enough time on it to drive traffic or for that matter post articles with researhed targeted keywords. I’m learning Alex – thank you – that the niche cannot be to wide, it needs to be more targeted. So adsense is not dead it just needs to be used properly

Do you really think that people will stop visiting your blog if you display adsesne ads? As long as your content is of a high quality I feel readers will always come back to a blog regardless if adsense ads are displayed or not. They may not click on any ads, but we all know that those more likely to click on ads are those sent there by search engines.

I agree with the idea that it is OK to pick and choose whether Adsense is appropriate for your site. When I am promoting affiliate products, I choose not to have Adsense, as I do not want to drive traffic away from the product(s) I am directly promoting…it doesn’t make sense.

I have not used Adsense in a while now. At one time I had a lot of niche blogs with Adsense on them and i was making some decent money. However my webhost went out of business about the same time that Google wanted more serious content to give your page some ranking juice. I know I have it on some sites somewhere, but not all that many. I like to get an affiliate program that ties into my blog and use that.
Is Google paying any better now?
All depends what niche you are targeting. For my niche debt consolidation site, one click is $3+, better than any affiliate product I’d promote. But… for sites with Adsense click of up to $0.65 you better think about finding a good affiliate product to promote.
I’ve never found the Ad Targeting option to be very useful or effective but other than that I agree with you. Adsense is definitely ONE way to make money from a website and if done correctly you can make a lot of money from it. But if done incorrectly you’ll not make much.
But this goes for every way you want to make money from a website. If you do it wrong it doesn’t work.

I use Adsense on many of my sites, with varying success. But I also use affiliate products, again with varying success. It is important to get your income from various sources, so if one goes down you are not completely knocked out.
Great tip on the easiest way to add the section targeting. I need to do that on a couple of my blogs that still seem to have non-targeted ads.

Hi Alex,
I’ve been turning Adsense ads on and off for a few months now, not being able to decide whether they’re good or bad. I agree with Fiona in that they detract if you are promoting affiliate products on the page also. So I’ve started just putting them on pages with no affiliate promotions. I read something yesterday though explaining to us non-techie mere mortals how to make Adsense only show up to visitors from search engines. This seemed like a good idea to me so that you don’t annoy your regular readers. Also if someone gets to your site but it’s obviously not where they wanted to be, you have an exit route for them to make you a few cents too. I’m going to give it a go and see what happens.
Cheers, Chloe
