ded_moroz.jpgWith everyone wishing you Merry Christmas today I wanted to stop for just a second and step away from the sales furry that seem to be so often attributed with this holiday. We all take it for granted that Christmas is a time of giving. It is a time to spend with those we love and share the joy of the holiday but how often to we think about the roots of this tradition?

The word Christmas originated as a contraction of “Christ’s mass”. It is derived from the Middle English Christemasse and Old English Cristes mæsse, a phrase first recorded in 1038. In early Greek versions of the New Testament, the letter Χ, is the first letter of Christ. Since the mid-16th century Χ, or the similar Roman letter X, was used as an abbreviation for Christ. Hence, “Xmas” is often used as an abbreviation for Christmas.

So, next time you say the words, think about where they originated from!

Merry Xmas to All !!!

The roots of this tradition go deep into the soil of the giving that God Almighty showed went he sent forth His Son to be born of a virgin. Because God so loved us, he gave his Son. This was and is the greatest gift of all. This is why we (should) celebrate Christmas. Some would not want to mention the name of Christ at “Christ Mass” for fear of offending others (and maybe lose a sale). Christ tells us that if we are ashamed of him and of his words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels. Please don’t abbreviate Christ. He has never cut (abbreviated) you or me short! Continue to give, love, fellowship, and share the holy day (every day of the year)!

Stephen,

I know where you’re coming from. Just the same, I think that Alex was trying to say the same thing you are, namely, “it is the Christ in Christmas that makes it Christmas.”

Another way to find an advantage in the use of “Xmas” from a Christian’s point of view is to remind people that Christmas (Xmas) provides us nothing without the Cross in it.

Thank you both for your Christmas wishes, and may God bless your New Year.

Alex, thank you for a great product, training, service, and support. This site, blog, and the Blogging School have got to be one of the, if not THE best, values on the internet. I hope you have had a tremendous time away with your wife and children, and I look very much forward to what you have for us in the coming year.

Thanks for all your wishes guys!

I did have nice vacation, not counting that my laptop got fried while I was in ski lodge :) Now am working hard to catch up with all the correspondence and blog.

Thanks you all for support and yes, I did mean what I said - Christmas takes its roots from Christ, no matter what form of Christianity we follow and on day we celebrate birth of Christ it should be clear and remembered as such.

Alex
