With everyone wishing you Merry Christmas today I wanted to stop for just a second and step away from the sales furry that seem to be so often attributed with this holiday. We all take it for granted that Christmas is a time of giving. It is a time to spend with those we love and share the joy of the holiday but how often to we think about the roots of this tradition?
The word Christmas originated as a contraction of “Christ’s mass”. It is derived from the Middle English Christemasse and Old English Cristes mæsse, a phrase first recorded in 1038. In early Greek versions of the New Testament, the letter Χ, is the first letter of Christ. Since the mid-16th century Χ, or the similar Roman letter X, was used as an abbreviation for Christ. Hence, “Xmas” is often used as an abbreviation for Christmas.
So, next time you say the words, think about where they originated from!
Merry Xmas to All !!!
from me and my family…
