Jail Time For Trick-or-Treating

halloween_image.jpgHappy Halloween! That is unless you leave in Hampton Roads …

I have just finished reading an article on regulations for tonight’s festivities in my local area and was very surprised to find out that in my city (Virginia Beach) it is a Class 4 Misdemeanor to trick-or treat if you are older then 12! Not that I was prepping to pull out my costume and make a dash for free candies but isn’t it a bit excessive?

Here is a quote from the article directly related to my city:

The hours & rules for trick-or-treating in Hampton Roads

Virginia Beach: Children 12 and younger may go trick-or-treating until 8 p.m. Anyone trick-or-treating after 8 p.m. is committing a Class 4 misdemeanor. Anyone older than 12 making the rounds on Halloween night also is committing a Class 4 misdemeanor.

I guess I should be happy they don’t slap people with real jail time! And while I understand the necessity to protect the public I do have to ask the question …. What Are We Coming To?

What if in your family kids are different ages and 12 seems like a low age as many middle school students enjoy the traditional festivities as much as younger kids …

What Do You Think? Or Do you have your own story you want to share?

Yeah, I think that is silly. What a stupid rule. Kids should be able to trick or treat if they want. I have a 6, 12, and 14 year old. The 6 year old is going, of course, the 12 year is too cool, and the 14 year old wants to go, but I told him he may be too old. But if a teen came to my door to trick or treat, I would give them candy. But after 8:30…I turn my lights out, and don’t answer the door anymore. I think treating it as a misdemeaner is a bit over the top.

    Cori,

I agree and what is even more stupid – who is going to enforce this? Our tax dollars already went for these geniuses to meet and make the stupid decisions and now do we also have to support extra effort required by police to enforce it?

It is amazing how stupid people manage to climb on ever step of the political ladder. I’m just upset that I’m forced to pay for this stupidity ..

I think that this is nuts. I am a resident in Va beach myself and have a 2 year old son and a 15 year old sister. She was going to dress up this year to help my son go around to collect candy. Does this mean I should worry that she or I could get into some kind of trouble. I think they should focus more on molesters and such being in the area, rather than families that dress up in spirit of the holiday!!

Chrissakes, I’m totally guilty of both of those. I know there was some trouble with teens taking candy bowls and kicking in jack-o-lanterns, but really?! My best friend looks about twelve and she’s fourteen. Another one of my best friends looks fifteen and she’s twelve (barely). How do they expect to enforce this? Sheesh. I’m handing out candy this year, and I don’t care how old they are unless they give us a hard time.

I think this is the most ridiculous thing I have heard. This could be part of the reason this country is screwed up. Maybe if the decision makers and law makers spent as much time on real issues as they do on stupid things we would not be in this shape. Maybe they should have kept watch over the banks as much as they do trick or treating and so many people would not have lost their homes or became upside down with their mortgage.

Bunch of flippin retards…..my children will trick or treat till yea whenever…

  7. Shawnda says:

Im sorry but until the city is paying for all the candy being handed out they have no way of prosecuting someone for it! Its not like a person giving out candy is going to testify amd put a 13 and up in jail for trick or treating! Powerplay by the city officials!
