I think from a technology perspective palm pre could be a contender to the iPhone in the future but at the moment still has some way to go. The OS is impressive but battery life isn't great and I understand there have been some usability issues with hardware. Easy to fix in subsequent models I guess. The human factor (ie iPhone loyalty) will be more difficult for them to fix though - that's for sure!

Palm debuted the Pre at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show, as the first mobile phone to use the Texas Instruments OMAP 3430 processor, as well as its initial exclusive carrier agreement with Sprint, which operates a CDMA network in the United States.

The iPhone is a great toy, there may be better phones coming out now but the iPhone will always be the most wanted. It has more of a 'fun-factor', and as you say apple have a real fan base who will stick with them no matter what is available.

Mandys last blog post..1.5 Million books on your iPhone

I heard a bit about this on some Podcasts and saw a photo but this video shows it off well.
Apple fans, no one will outdo them, you are right about that. This phone does look good and it looks to be the saviour of Palm, maybe but as with all smart phones in my country the data plans are so expensive and limiting. The major telco here has something like 10meg for 10 or 20 dollars per month on top of a 60 plan that gives you limited calls.

One of the weaknesses of the iPhone is the on-screen keyboard, the Palm Pre's hardware keyboard looks to be far superior, if the interface is comparable to the iPhone in terms of ease-of-use I don't see why they couldn't put up a serious challenge. I think the iPhone's success is due to rather more then simply Apple fanboys, the large screen and ease of use were a significant step up from previous touchscreen phones, it is a good product, whose sales go some way beyond hardcore Apple fans.

You bring up a good point -- it won't be an iPhone killer because of the dedication of Apple fans. I love Apple products, although I don't consider myself one of the crazies, but I think competition would only be good for the innovation of these types of phones.
