This post wasn’t planned but in my mind it is extremely important and simply had to be written. You can choose not to read it but if you are receiving my eZine you might want to take a minute and look over it real quick.

There are 2 things to be understood:

1. I’m an Affiliate Marketer and not Just Blogger

I don’t do too many promotions and when I do - I only promote products and services I personally believe in or tried and used myself. It is extremely RARE exception that I promote something without having complete access to the product.

In this post I want to describe - Why “MORE” tag is a must have on blog and how to implement it. And as always - this post is based on my personal opinion and something that I use and has proven beneficial to me.

Why You Should Use “More” tag?

Do you enjoy “Duplicate Content” penalties? Not sure?

Well, allow me to explain. By default WordPress is extremely Search Engine Un-Friendly! And by that I simply mean that SAME post you publish can be displayed in several different locations, accessed by search engines and indexed. Let’s take for example a post written with name - Post Name, by default you can find it in several locations:

• www.domain.com - your home page has it initially
• www.domain.com/page/2 - as more posts published it will through pages and than last number will continue to change and be indexed by Google, showing duplicate content
• www.domain.com/category/ - your category page has it in its entirety
• www.domain.com/tag/tagname/ - each tag you assigned to the post will have its own page and your new post will be indexed from there
• www.domain.com/2008/11/ - your archives will display the post in full glory
• www.domain.com/?s=post - your search results pages have your post full content
• www.domain.com/feed - even your RSS feed, accessible by search engines will show you post
• www.domain.com/post-name - and finally you actual full post view page will have it

As I have just shown above search engines will see that SAME content published multiple times on your blog and to avoid it been indexed - they will place all but one page into what is known as “supplemental search results” (it used to be true couple month ago, and I hope it didn’t change as I write it). Why is it bad? Read the Google definition:

A supplemental result is just like a regular web result, except that it’s pulled from our supplemental index. We’re able to place fewer restraints on sites that we crawl for this supplemental index than we do on sites that are crawled for our main index. For example, the number of parameters in a URL might exclude a site from being crawled for inclusion in our main index; however, it could still be crawled and added to our supplemental index.

Supplemental results will only be shown to searchers IF regular Google SERP’s have very few pages to answer the search query and in currently competitive market chances of that happening are next to nothing. Problem you have now is that you can’t control WHICH page is INDEXED to be shown for regular searches unless you take some measures.

Let’s Discuss the Cure for The Dupes

What I will provide here is what I personally use and what works for me - your results can’t be quite different. Improper implementation can be also quite destructive to your existing blog - by using guidelines I provide, you take full responsibility for your own actions.

1. Use MORE tag on ALL your posts.

Using more tag allows you to split the main post content into small part of the post that is shown in all the index, archive, search results, tag, etc pages and while it gives access to people to content they need - it is not showing it in its Entirety and will not be seen by search engine as duplicate to what is placed on your main Full Post view page, assuming you didn’t split it in such a way that most of your content goes before the more tag.

Adding the more tag is very simple, just click the MORE icon on your visual editor, shown below or use MORE in html editor

That will effectively split your post in exact location this tag is placed.

2. Change your theme templates to display Excerpt

This is a more drastic measure as you loose control to great extent over what is shown on the pages that aggregate your posts, such as main home page, archives, etc. Excerpt will take predefined number of characters from your post and display it on those pages, after the theme is edited IF you don’t provide other text in EXCERPT field in your post.

But first, edit your index.php, archive.php, archives.php and any other pages responcible for displaying content of multiple posts (don’t do it on single.php - that is the file we need to display full content on) and replace:

<?php the_content('Read more'); ?> with

<?php the_excerpt(); ?>

Doing the above mentioned will effectively replace full post content on all of the aggregation pages with an excerpt of the post instead of full content and will help you prevent the Duplicate Content penalties to some extent. You can still control what is shown on those pages by using this Advanced option while writing post:

Use this ONLY if you don’t want to use MORE tag in each post.

3. Use a Plugin to Avoid Indexing Of Pages You Don’t Want in SERP’s

I personally use the All In One SEO plugin to exclude all categories, tags and other supplemental pages on my site from been indexed by search engines. What that plugin does is places the code into the HTML head section of those pages that tells Google to Not Index the page itself but Do Follow link to the posts shown on it:

<meta name="robots" content="noindex,follow" />

I have also seen people mention WordPress Duplicate Content Cure as good option to use for same effect. Its up to you which plugin you decide to use, as long as you find a way to NOINDEX on categories, tags, etc pages to avoid the duplicate content.

4. Use robots.txt to Exclude Certain Pages From Indexing

After some trial and error I have ended up with a robots.txt file that works quite nicely for me and helps me to exclude all the pages I don’t want to be indexed, such as FEED and TRACKBACK among the few more important.

If you like - you can copy my robots.txt file and adjust for your own blog. Simply place it into your blog root folder and BE SURE to verify it using Google Webmaster Tools. try accessing some of the more important posts and pages on your blog using tool they provide to verify that robots.txt doesn’t stop indexing those pages.

Using option  have shown above, simply provide the url and check it, see image below:

That will verify you file is correct and will not break your blog.

All the options I have outlined above should help you avoid the duplicate content penalties and also help you display MORE of your content on main home page and other aggregation pages while keeping the page load speed down to normal.

MORE tag allows you to display same 10 (or however many you choose) posts on your main blog page while showing slightly less text, less images and help your page to load faster!

MORE tag is in this case allows you to keep MORE of your visitors on your page reading, instead of the leavign the page after waiting for several minutes. More Is Better!

It allows you to Greet Visitors to Your Blog based on what url they come from. I do have a small issue with the plugin but you’ll just have to read the post to learn about it…

First of all - what exactly does this plugin do. I’m not going to be original here but simply copy the list of features from Thaya’s blog:

Features
* Show a different greeting message to your visitor depending on the referrer URL. You can add/edit/delete/disable these greeting messages as you choose.
* Show a default greeting message even if the visitor does not match any of your configured referrer URL.
* Show a default greeting message even if the visitor does not have java script enabled.
* AJAX greeting message in the front end makes it compatible with caching plugins and WPMU.
* AJAX administrative interface that uses nonce verification to discourage hackers.
* Ability to set a timeout to forget a visitor so we do not keep nagging them with greeting messages.
* Ability to setup regular expression rules to exclude some referrer URLs from seeing greeting messages.
* Ultra customizable greeting message box (with CSS) allowing you to pre-pend/append HTML around the greeting message box.
* Currently the following referrers are installed by default, but you can easily create your own if your favorite referrer is not on the list!
1. del.icio.us
2. delicious.com
3. digg.com
4. google.com
5. yahoo.com
6. stumbleupon.com
7. technorati.com
8. twitter.com

Plugin seem to work as advertised and once working properly - it could be a perfect replacement for the What Would Seth Godin Do plugin that I love and use on my blogs. BUT…

As I have mentioned above - I have couple issues with the plugin and hopefully Thaya will not be too upset about me sharing them.

1. To install the plugin you have to place piece of code into your blog theme. While I understand that this allows greater customization for the users - I think it should be done via WordPress loop and simply provided with choices to end user. Much like we have with WWSGD - it gives us choice to place the message Above the Post or Bellow the Post. That is all we need, plus the options on how often to show the messages.
2. Plugin comes by default with several services configured but either my install got messed up or I misunderstood the statement - my options do not show those service pre-configured. Quite possible I have to go in and manually add each and everyone of them but it is just TOO TIME consuming for me and time is one commodity I don’t have right now. IMPORTANT UPDATE: If you get messed up install as I have described right here - reload Default Settings as Thaya advises in his comment below and all the settings appear.

While I love the idea of the plugin and how it what it provides I had to deactivate it on my blog, perhaps until the time I will get to mess with the configuration options.

• And my second post leads to a person Liz introduced me to - Gail Goodwin and her Inspiration blog. Quite frankly I’m hard pressed to point out any single blog post and instead I just want to lead you to the latest - Celebrate Your Moments of Success.  If you ever needed a boost to help you move ahead with your daily tasks and just a bit of inspiration - her blog is a great place to go!

• Michel Fortin in his older but great post P.S.: Don’t Forget to Include This in Your Copy outlines importance of the Post Script in your copy! Michel is one of the top copywriters on the web and importance of the P.S. that he outlines in his post will serve you well. Don’t disregard it just because you are not creating a sales page! The ending paragraph of your blog post is a form of P.S. you can use on your blog! Your signature on forums is your P.S. Your email to a friends -SHOULD include P.S. Just a few points but read his post to get the full idea!

This post is not to make an example out of anyone but rather help the person, who commented on my blog and in process I have discovered the issue. It is also designed to help you to ensure you don’t have similar problem as it will cost you dearly in terms of Traffic You Will Never Get!

In fact I want to share the link love with person, whose blog will be used as example to compensate for the publicity - CICILIA WIDHIANA PUTRI WIJAYA.

I have used her chosen keywords as anchor tag to hopefully help her benefit from it. Her blog looks pretty nice and I’m sure does all the things she wants it to do and this is not what I’m about to discuss here. I want to point out ONE GLARING problem with her blog that will pretty much ensure she will not get much in terms of traffic from Google.

See the image below and tell me if you find any issues…

This is the result of search For All pages from her site, and couple things I have highlighted:

1. At the time of the search she has about 21 pages indexed in Google. I have highlighted them in yellow
2. Each page has exactly same Page Title and Description! I have highlighted them in Green.

Bad thing about this is that she probably doesn’t even realize it! Even if she manages to score well for one of her chosen keywords, unless it is part of the Title, URL or Description - her chances to get the click greatly reduced!

How Do You Fix It?

While it can be done via code changes, etc - the easiest way is to use one of the WordPress plugins that can help you control meta Information of each post and page, even if you forget to add it!

• All In One SEO - a plugin great many WordPress bloggers use and one used on this blog and very well supported by developer.
• WordPress SEO Master - a new comer to the scene it acts like a Swiss army knife for WordPress SEO and has great many options!

I personally use All In One SEO and that is what I’ll base my fix on.

What you see highlighted in Green are Meta Title and Meta Description that can be quite easily defined as you create your posts or pages or simply allow the plugin do it on autopilot, although I recommend you make an effort to create Google Meta information for your blog posts because that is what displayed by Search Engines! Make your meta information stand out like an AD FOR YOUR BLOG POST!

See how I have done it for this post using options provided by All In One SEO plugin:

Once again, Meta Title and Meta Description are highlighted by Green. I also made sure to highlight one important factor - Number of characters. Google can only display so many on their Search Results Page and it pays to conform to their standard. According to Stomping The Search Engines 2 if your description displayed with “…” indicator - it gets less clicks!

A simple change that can mean more traffic for you!

And as result - each page of your blog will get its own page title and description to help you score better in Search results and get you well deserved traffic!

Before you agree or disagree - consider this… Just 1 post submitted to 5 blog carnivals each week gives you 5×4=20 incoming links with Full SEO juice and if your post title was written right - with keywords of your choice! It gets even better - those are One Way Links from content and deep linking to a post of your choosing!

Whether this strategy will be as effective for every type of blog or not remains to be seen but it is well worth to take 30 minutes each week, try the process for a month and if it doesn’t work for you - move to different strategy! Outside of 2 hours of total time investment you lose nothing!

Locate Blog Carnivals Related To Your Niche

Power of using blog carnivals lies in the fact that it gives you incoming link from within the RELEVANT content and will help you boost your Technorati rank as well as Google rankings, if done right!

I use Blog Carnival to locate the editions of Blog Carnivals organized by other bloggers that related to the content of my blog or the content of my post!

Just because the general content of the blog that runs the carnival you are submitting to is not very related to yours - it don’t matter! You might have a post or WRITE a post that you can submit to semi-related carnivals since that individual post WILL be related to the theme of that carnival!

An example: lets assume your blog is about “make money blogging”, seems like popular topic… Also let’s assume there are only so many carnivals you can submit to without spamming them. What do you do to continue building links using this strategy?

How About Personal Development And Motivation Topics? You can write a post that might sound like “How To Say Motivated To Make Money Blogging”. It will confirm to both your general topic and the requirements of the carnival!

Google sees the content of the individual post your link is coming from and not just the content of the whole blog!

While Blog carnival has many editions listed - you got to verify them before wasting your time on submissions! Some were started and abandoned!

Verify they actually do active postings and create a list of blog carnivals!

I personally like to create an A-List and B-List. And by that I mean I simply have a text file that lists blog carnivals I have verified and know that accept my posts. I simply separate A and B based on how they are related to my main niche topic!

I also recommend you note for yourself the frequency of the Carnivals Editions! Some are every week, some bi-weekly and some are once a month! Submitting too many posts to same carnival can get you banned, so keeping track of submissions is important!

Set Schedule For Blog carnival Submission And Follow It

For this strategy to work - you need to follow it. An obvious reminder but it needs to be made. I know I have set a schedule for myself to go and submit my blog posts to carnival and STILL fail to follow it. Perhaps it is simply a personal disorganization or perhaps time limitations but at the end it doesn’t matter.

So I ask of you to at least for the first month that you will test this strategy you set yourself a schedule and follow it! Nothing elaborate, once a week for 30 minutes will do.

• Create your baseline using tool discussed in first part of this series.
• Pick your best post for the week that is also Search Engine Optimized for one of your target key phrases
• Submit to at least 5 carnivals each week.
• Record where and when submitted, luckily Blog Carnivals will send you an email as long as you have used correct email in submission form.
• Rinse and repeat weekly.
• Verify your results against baseline and decide if process will work for you!
