If you’re fairly new to blogging, it can sometimes feel like you’re not getting anywhere with your blog.  You’ve got very little traffic, almost zero interaction, and not much hope it will get any better any time soon.

I started my latest blog roughly around October/November of 2009. (I think!) So around about six months ago.  Today it’s currently a PR 3, with an Alexa ranking of 478,175 and climbing.  In the last six months I’ve had roughly 22,165 visits and 57,129 page views.

Now that is fairly modest in comparison to many more established blogs, but I’m pretty proud of the traction I’ve gained so far and am excited about its continued growth.   And I feel there are a handful of simple things I did that really helped to propel that growth fairly quickly.

1.  Killer unique content. I’m a freelance ghostwriter by trade, and writing is a bit fun for me, so it might be a little easier for me than perhaps others.  But killer unique content is vitally important if you really want your blog to shine, to gain readers and interaction, and please Google.

Experiment with your content, take risks, and see what kind of response you get.  Also, pay attention to post length… it depends on the niche, but sometimes longer posts are more suitable and sometimes shorter posts.  Sometimes a nice blend is preferred by your target market.

2.  Take advantage of social media. I’m fortunate in that I have quite a large Twitter following that I make a point to interact with regularly.  So when I post something new, I automatically Tweet about it, sometimes several times throughout the first day and the next.

I also pull my content directly to my Facebook FanPage, as well as often post new content to my wall for my other FB friends.  If you cultivate those relationships, you’ll find your content gets ReTweeted and shared if it’s good… which means more eyes and traffic for you.

3. Schedule your own ReTweets. I primarily use Su.Pr to schedule these.  I do an initial Retweet, and then I schedule a few more throughout the day and into the next day.  I also make sure that if it’s a really good post (IMO) to Stumble it through the Su.Pr interface as well.

I firmly believe this has been a really large part in my blog gaining more traction.  I also schedule a few ReTweets here and there using Hootsuite as well.  Just be sure to mix it up and make the times a bit random.  ReTweeting the same stuff at the same times every day won’t win you any favors with your followers.

4. Post frequently and on a schedule if possible. The most successful blogs usually post every day and sometimes several times a day.  However that’s not always possible for some, so just simply choosing to post on a regular weekly schedule, such as 1-3 times a week could work equally as well for your blog.

I’d recommend starting off with posting at least 5 days a week to start, and then if you want to taper off as you gain a readership, you can.  I’d also recommend that if you only post 1-3 times per week, really make those posts quality with a lot of shine and sparkle, as well as slightly longer than the typical 500 word article.

5. Finally? Guest post. This is actually only my third guest post, my first was on ProBlogger and the second on a paid forum, but I’ve seen a huge increase in readership, interaction, and traffic just from those two things.

So I’ve decided to make guest posting a regular part of my schedule for awhile, and this makes my third.  Guest posting can be a huge benefit to your own blog’s traffic and readership, and it’s a win-win because you get to give the blog owner you are guest posting for a nice day off from posting themselves.  Not to mention you are building a quality relationship with a fellow blog owner, which is an excellent way to network in my book.

There you have it!  5 simple ways you can improve your blog and it’s traction on the web, and see a marked increase in your traffic and readership.  It might not be a perfect strategy, and it does involve work on your part, but it’s working well for me and could potentially work well for you too.  Now get to blogging!

I’ve been guest blogging as long as I’ve been blogging: for about 3 years now. All my self-branding achievements as well as all my most notable career ups would not have been possible without guest posting.

Throughout my guest blogging career, I have been wondering if that would be a smart idea to attempt to create such a place where guest bloggers might get connected to the blog owners who look for good free content for their sites.

In the end, I thought that would be a a useful tool actually because such a service would be a place where everyone wins and quality plays a decisive role: guest bloggers get links and exposure, blog owners get free content (which means extra traffic, more search referrals, more social media shares, etc) and poor quality posts get rejected.

This is why, a bit more than 3 months ago I launched: My Blog Guest: the forum that targets guest bloggers and aim to connect them to the blog owners.

It’s been a long way to that site. I had no idea which form it should take. Many of my contacts who I had shared my plans with thought it should be a market place (ala text-link-ads.com) where a blogger comes, chooses his category and adds the best blogs “to cart”. I thought this would diminish the most important role of the project (and guest blogging in general).

The main goal of the site is not to help users build free links with content: it is to connect people to bloggers in the target niche for more benefits in the long run.

Except for the basic forum features, I added just a few more options to help the members find each other:

• Tag-based system: one can add as many tags as he or she wants. Tags reflect the areas of the user’s expertise and his/her interests (for guest bloggers) or the topics the user’s blog focuses on (for blog owners). Tags are integrated in the user search.
• Alert system: users can subscribe to email alerts to get notified of the new sites added to the category they are interested in (there are currently Health, Finance, Technology, Entertainment, LifeStyle, Creativity and General. The latter one is for those blogs that fall under more than one category or just are about something else.
• Rating system. Blogs are rated based on their Google PR, domain and content age and backlinks. This should be a bit of help to those who need to quickly evaluate the blog power. Users are rated based on their social media activity. This metric should reflect the estimated ability of the user to help promote the posted content.

The service is still in beta, I am constantly looking for feedback to try to improve it; so more features might be added soon!

I do hope the place will turn useful for those who are interested in guest posting and I am going to keep it free and free of any self-promotion.

Best way to boost your blog popularity is by converting your visitors into readers. Nothing can beat loyalty of repeat visitors because they actually like what you have to say. But how do you accomplish such a difficult task?

Many people don’t necessary arrive to your blog on your front page and might have landed on page that interested them but wasn’t the best example of your work. How do you draw people deeper into your blog and present them with your best work. Well, if they commented – you have an excellent option!

I want to present to you a [tag-tec]WordPress plugin[/tag-tec] I have found to be incredibly useful on my own blog and I will actually show you step-by-step how to install and configure it. Tracking your blog traffic could be the best thing you ever did if you aim to rank well in search engines. There is one simple reason for me to say this. That reason is “link clusters”. Courtney Tuttle wrote a great post on link clusters and what they can do for your rankings the other day.

There is no point in repeating what he said, since he explains it all too well already. But I wanted to touch on this and show you how to take a step back from what he recommends you do and actually track your traffic with ease.

With Statcounter you can track as many sites as you want absolutely for free. They do offer a paid option, but you don’t need that. Many people get confused as Statcounter only tracks your first 500 keywords, supposedly.

But it actually keeps going. You can track your blog’s traffic daily, weekly, monthly or even yearly, all within your Statcounter admin.

Below you see a screen shot of some nice visitor graphics. This is only the beginning. If you really want to work those link clusters Court suggests, then you’ll need to take a special close look at two of your stats. These are:

• recent keyword activity
• recent came from

All this data will give you great insight on who is sending you traffic and more importantly, what keywords point to your site from the search engines. Once you get Google traffic, you can work with this and increase your organic traffic tremendously.

I can vouch for this method as I have tried this myself a few weeks ago and I’m already seeing improved rankings on very highly competitive keywords.

For WordPress users, tracking traffic with Statcounter is easily done via a Plugin that can be downloaded from their admin page.

Just follow their instructions and you’ll be able to install this with ease. If you have problems, just ask via the comments section.

They also have a support forum which personally I never had to use. But it is there in any case and from what I see right now, it is active and up to date.

If you desire great Google search listings, then this method is for sure going to help you with it. The secret to getting there is to optimise as often as you can. I normally try to do a few posts once per week.

If you are really anal about your stats, you can track a lot more than that. For example you can see whether you have returning visitors, what the entry and exit pages are for your readers, where they came from, analyze keywords, what country they are from, how long they stay at your site and more.

Try it out, it is free and worth a lot.

A not-so-new thing for several blog owners is to use guest bloggers to fill in holes in their own posting schedules, or to expand the areas/niche to which the blog focuses on. Guest blogging is nothing new, but what exactly are the benefits, and is it worth it for both the host blog and the guest blogger?

There are indeed several benefits to both the host-blog and the guest blogger and the combined effect of all elements are great for both blogs on short-term as well as long-term.

For the host blog there are several benefits:

• The host blog will benefit from an increased exposure from another blog, as the guest blogger is more than likely to inform his/her own readership that he is now blogging on other respected blogs.

• A clear signal is sent to the host blogs readership of ; “I’m getting bigger. I can bring in guest bloggers that are willing to write blog entries for me”.

• The readers of the host blog is also given a clear indication that the host blogger cares for his readership, and wants to bring as much information and knowledge to his visitors as possible.

Now, there are several benefits to the guest blogger as well, and there are several great reasons for you to start posting on other blogs.

• Making friends
  Getting good relationships with fellow bloggers in your niche is a good thing for securing your future as a blogging authority in your niche. If you look at other blog owners in your chosen niche as enemies you have a serious long-term problem. Most niches are well enough visited, that they will

• Increased traffic to your own blog
  The exposure of your post to a well-visited blog will give you more exposure to your own blog, and will most likely bring traffic from the host blog to see read more of your stuff if the post is interesting enough.

• Links count
  Most blog owners will happily give a link back to you in return for a post, either directly in the post itself or on the blogroll. This link will help your future rankings in the search engines, and is a great way to earn great links for no money except the time invested in writing the blog post itself.

• Valid links count more
  Even-though all links count towards better ranking in the search engines, it is well known that links from relevant sites gives much more in terms of Google juice. What do you think a link from a homepage with the title “Olive plucking in the Ukraine” counts in the eyes of Google compared to a link from a relevant site?

• New visitors
  Your blog might cater to a certain crowd/niche that has been working just fine, but as the competition for visitors grows ever more fiercely, the best way to gain new visitors is by providing your visitors with great content, and showing your writing skills and knowledge to the readership of other blogs is a great way to gain new and interested visitors.

• The right visitors
  As any more experienced blogger/webmaster will tell you, getting thousands of visitors daily is nice, but I will trade it for 100 targeted visitors at any time. A targeted user is more likely to bookmark your site, sign up for the feed and bring new visitors along with him. From a money perspective, it is also more likely that the advertising you serve will be much more targeted to that particular visitor, and increase the probability of him/her clicking on an advertising link.

• They might return the favor
  Maybe the blog owner might even return the favor at some point. The same reasons that make writing as a guest blogger for you, is a great reason for the blog owner to write a guest entry on your blog.

This is my first guest blog, but I am excited to see if my predictions is correct. Will I receive more visitors, better search engine rankings? Time will tell.
