Earning from your blog will always depend on getting people to that blog and then getting those people to take the action required – whether that is to click on an affiliate link or an ad or something else completely. But it all starts with generating traffic. So where you can market your blog online for free?

Technorati

At one point, Technorati was pretty much the only decent blog search engine, of sorts. Of course we now have the comprehensive Google Blog Search, but Technorati.com remains an excellent blog directory and one you should definitely be listed in.

Twitter

How could we mention traffic generation for blogs without talking Twitter? The micro-blogging platform has huge traffic generation potential for bloggers. However, it’s not all about just registering and posting links. You need followers and you will only get those by posting relevant material, by networking with people in similar areas and with similar niches and by learning about the platform. Don’t assume you can just register and paste links. You should really take time to see what other people in a similar niche are doing on Twitter and begin to network.

On Blogs Belonging to Others

Guest posting! This is a great way not only to get some of you written material exposed to a different audience, but also to drive traffic to your own site. Guest posting isn’t as simple as just sending any old article through to a blogger though. Successful guest posting comes from learning more about your target blog. Read it! Read the comments from the other readers to get an idea of the material they are interested in reading and write up a UNIQUE article tailored just to that blog. Why should a blogger run your material if you cannot be bothered to spend the time making sure it’s relevant?

Getting this right is a great way of driving traffic and again of networking with other bloggers in a similar area.

These are just three ways of almost countless means of marketing a blog online. Social Media is hugely important in traffic generation to blogs now. But generating traffic is only the beginning. There’s little point in getting traffic if the content on your blog isn’t of a high enough quality to keep them coming back! So, before you begin marketing, it’s worth making sure that everything on your blog is in exactly the shape you want it to be and offers something of quality to your readers.

This might sound strange coming from me, considering that I make my online living taking full advantage of the capabilities offered by WordPress and yet, here is my statement:

You Should NEVER Use WordPress For Membership Management!

On last webinar for Expert WordPress members I have shared this opinion and received quite a feedback, which is greatly appreciated. I know that my statement goes against what many other people are currently teaching but I have very good reasons!

Reasons I will share in this blog post and let you decide if my opinion makes sense or not, it is YOUR ONLINE BUSINESS after all!

First allow me to repeat the obvious…

I love WordPress and I think as Content Management System it simply has no equals when it comes to functionality, simplicity, extendability and customization options!

WordPress, thanks to its modular design and huge support by community, developers and designers has a solution that can be applied to pretty much any kind of need to present content!

WordPress is constantly developing and enhanced in functionality, new plugins to extend its ability are introduced, mostly free and some are with a price tag and this is one of the reasons I will recommend to anyone reading this post

Do Not Use WordPress For Paid Memberships

Anytime we use paid membership, we build business. Business that we rely on to provide us with a steady flow of income we can depend on and build upon. But as part of running a membership business model we commit to our customers to provide them with secure access to our site and to ensure their private information stored within our membership system doesn’t get into hands of hackers!

We Are Obligated To Do All In Our Power To Protect Our Customers!

And here is why I think WordPress is a bad fit for this model…

Membership Management functionality currently provided to WordPress via several plugins. Some are commercial and some are free but it doesn’t matter which one you will choose to use as they all share one big flaw – their dependency on the core of WordPress!

• By themselves they will not function and same goes the WordPress core – without one of these plugins you can’t have paid membership! This is fact #1!

• WordPress is constantly evolving and new versions are released that sometimes make plugins incompatible with latest version and you either have to wait upgrading to latest WordPress core version until plugin is updated to be fully operational with it or you have to look for new plugin to replace functionality, especially true with free plugins. This is fact #2.

• WordPress is Open Source and its code is constantly under scrutiny not only by the good guys but also by people who are looking for a way to compromise your site. If you have been blogging for a while I’m sure you have seen those WordPress security releases that simply HAVE TO BE doneASAP in order to avoid being hacked, as exploit is in the wild and actively used by bad guys. This is fact #3

Now imagine this scenario:

You have a WordPress blog used to manage membership system. You have several hundred customers paying on monthly bases (or whatever schedule you use). As any WordPress blog you have several plugins to add functionality for SEO at the very least and obviously at least one plugin that is responsible for turning your blog into membership system.

Now imagine that WordPress core team just released a security upgrade that have to be applied ASAP or your blog can be compromised and hacker can take control over every aspect of it, including FULL ACCESS to your customers information.

You quickly contact support of the developer who created the plugin you use for Membership Management before jumping into upgrade, as you have to ensure that it will continue to work with new version only to learn that he is taking romantic vacation on secluded island somewhere in Fiji and will not be back for next couple weeks…

What Do You Do?

Do you upgrade the WordPress core, as you should, to protect your blog and your customer data and risk that your membership management portion stops working and no support for it will be available for a while?

Or do you continue using insecure version of the blog praying that it doesn’t become a target for attack until plugin is compatible with it, as you simply can’t afford loosing income?

What if you actually did what you should and have upgraded and your membership plugin is now broken, your customer support swamped with complains from customers and you know that you will not be able to fix the problem for next 2 weeks, while developer enjoying the vacation?

Which scenario fits you better?

I know those are some extreme scenarios but not uncommon! I know there are always solution to any problem and you can actually outsource fixing the plugin in scenario above but I personally prefer that my membership script is separate and with dedicated support!

If you are planning to start membership site I highly recommend you avoid doing it with WordPress! There are plenty of scripts that will provide you with all the functionality you need – securely and safely!

I personally use and recommend either Launch Formula Marketing or Easy Member Pro. Each one is great at what it does and comes at different price points. EMP is actually one that would be great fit for many!

Niche blogs can be monetized using any of the multiple options: AdSense, Affiliate Marketing, Selling ad Space… place your own favorite method here…

But the reality is – selling your own info product is most profitable option you can implement to get the most out of Niche. Not only do you get to keep all the money of the sales generated by you but also take advantage of the ready to go Army Of Affiliates just itching to promote your product if you use ClickBank or Paydotcom.com.

People who just want to earn through affiliate sales! Sounds familiar? That is because majority of the people simply not willing to create an info product and wiling to work for an affiliate commissions.

Reality is – creating info product can be hard, unless…

You decide to take the shortcut!

And I don’t mean outsourcing here – I mean a Niche Product with Private Lable Rights!

Developing a niche targeted info product requires many things to be done right – research, writing, copyrighting, graphics, coding, etc. I have no intentions to recite it all here, you know the drill if you ever attempted to create one!

PLR, when properly used simply offers a shortcut!

And by properly used I don’t mean to be passed around as a giveaway item or repackaged and sold to yet another person who will not take the action it was designed for:

Market And Sell It In Targeted Niche!

A simple concept that fr some reason most ignore – sell it where its needed.

PLR does have a few minuses, quality of the content is sometimes one of the factors and accuracy of the information within is another one. But if you are already an expert in the Niche or willing to learn enough to be able to share valuable information – It Is Only To Your Advantage!

All you need to do is edit the eBook with Private Label Rights, correct any information that requires correction, add your own “Expert Insight” and package it for sale! You are already provided with a sales materials and quite often some additional promotional items.

I generally don’t dive too much into PLR territory but my partner and I do run a PLR Membership site, Expert Content and as such we have ability to offer PLR Products to our own customers. It comes with many benefits for the price we ask and you can see them on sales page if interested.

But as with ANY Membership site – some people are just not interested to commit to monthly payments or just can’t afford it while still want to have the access to quality products.I have received enough emails about it to figure out that we need a different solution…

With 2009 coming to a close I wanted to share information I think is extremely important and call it:

Marketing Fitness Plan

Has a nice ring to it, huh? I like it! But what is even more important then my like or dislike of the title is an actual information.

As we strive to succeed and do more and more business online we become entangled into buy/sell relationships whether we like it or not. Sometimes it is based on immediate need, other time it could be an idea that struck a chord with you and lastly – because a sales copy was just too damn good!

You know its true! I get caught up in buying frenzy too!

In this post I want to share my own personal plan to “trim the marketing excess” and move into 2010 lean and mean marketing machine!

Trim Your Email Marketing Fat

If you are doing email marketing, and I hope you do, as other wise your online business is nothing but an overblown hobby, this one can be impacting you directly.

Impacting Financially!

Email marketing MUST be part of your overall strategy and properly implemented it will do wonders for your growth but it is also an cost you have to keep track of! I personally use aweber for my mailing list management but as you will see below what I’m about to share applies to both most popular autoresponder services: aweber and getresponse.

You see pricing strategies used by both services allow you to get started with minimal investment and as you grow – you pay more. And actually quite a bit more… See images below with pricing tables from both services:

I’m personally partial to aweber as it is more blogger friendly, or it used to be but either way – you have to pay attention to number of subscribers on your lists as this is what you are charged based on!

Tip: Trim Your Expense! But did you know that you are also getting charged for the leads that have chosen to leave your mailing list and have unsubscribed? As you can see in images below – it can quickly start costing you money!

Periodically Go through your email lists, search for unsubscribed leads and delete them from your autoresponder. This is especially important if it moves you from one pricing category into another!

Trim Your Monthly Commitments

Membership models have become a goal for many marketers as it creates a form of stability for the owner of the product / service and allows him concentrate on delivering value customers need. It also creates a financial stability among a few other nice things, but…

As membership model became popular – so did the concept successfully used by direct marketers for years – Forced Continuity! One that was superseded earlier this year in Internet Marketing world by “Optional Continuity”.

We are enticed to subscribe just because the value presented makes it a no brainer to try. Combine with low monthly cost (in many cases) it keeps that expense under our radar and can go unnoticed for months on your PayPal or credit card account!

Then please, do read on!

Small amounts can actually add-up in total to a rather sizable chunk! And what I’m here advising you to do is one thing:

Evaluate Each Subscription!

Take a look at what you are paying for, evaluate it against your current needs and you goals for 2010, track and create a summary of past performance!

You need to take a carefully look at each and every monthly subscription, service and decide if it is right for you or not. If it is directly tied to your core business, such as autoresponder, or if you can go without it.

You might be surprised what you will discover!

While there are many other ways to trim your unnecessary expenses – 2 I mentioned above can have a big impact on monthly bases and getting rid of what you don’t need or cutting it down in size can have a positive impact on your BETTER START OF 2010!

As my business develops, my experience grows and my needs change – I find myself looking for new insights, new information and new way to improve. I do however find myself often in one very simple predicament – Denial Of Authority.

You see, it is widely accepted that most effective way to master a skill, learn strategy or develop something new is to get yourself a Mentor! Mentor who can guide you through the murky waters of unknown to achieve your goals faster, more effectively and in short possible time frame. It will set you back financially at first but if your choice of mentor was correct – you can quickly recover it.

But it also implies that you trust that person unquestionably when it comes to certain matter of your business and willing to act As You Were Told. Not only because they know better but also because this is part of what you are paying for!

Which brings upfront my predicament – I simply can’t accept ANYTHING without questioning, analyzing and taking apart. My life has led me through multitude of experience and what I have learned “unquestionably” is that the only person I can trust without question is myself and same goes for any failure or success.

It is not the best place to be in but when you are pushing 40, it is not something that can be easily changed and I prefer not to make same mistakes twice, so I had to adopt!

I had to find a way to learn what I need while still maintaining my sanity and my personal views on life, on business and on many other things alone the way. It is not the easiest way to learn and if you have an opportunity to avoid it – I highly recommend it as it will definitely extend your road to success if not completely derail you!

My strategies are simple – I “stock” the people I chose to learn from to see what they are doing, attempt to understand why they are doing it and reverse engineer their process. Sometimes I just outright purchase what I need, if available in form of info product  That is about as far as I go in taking shortcuts!

Not the simplest road, as you can imagine but one that fits my personality very well.

This week we celebrate Thanksgiving in US and the reason behind this post is simple:

I Want To Thank My “Unsuspecting” Mentors!

• Jimmy D. Brown for his HUGE contribution and influence on my email marketing education and introduction to the “ethical email marketing”. His email marketing membership, which I don’t think is available anymore was an eye opener for me and led me to my first successful campaign.

• Mark Hendricks for his insights and ability to ask the questions that guided me to better understanding of what I’m doing and where I’m going and contributed to great improvements in my products. List building and continuation of learning concepts that Jimmy first introduced me to was direct result of Mark’s ongoing emails and participation in his 12 Days Of Christmas giveaways.

• Jack Humphrey and his Authority Black Book is what turned me to blogging and I never looked back. Whether Jack likes it or not – I consider myself one of his students and will be forever grateful to him for introducing me to the world of blogging!

• Ken McArthur for his HUGE heart and his ability to make you feel part of the success and a family! JV Alert Live is one of the few events I think every Internet entrepreneur must attend to experience the impact Ken and his friends can have on your life!

• Michele Fortin and his copywriting tips are a never-ending inspiration for both my ongoing blogging, my efforts to improve conversions and also to some extend my email marketing. I’ve settled with idea that I will not become a “copywriter for hire” but it doesn’t stop me from working on improving my ongoing marketing efforts.

• Dr. Ron Capps and his strategies on social interaction and marketing had a big and profound impact on how I do things on social networks. I might not reach the skill shared by master but grateful for a chance to learn!

• Brad Callen for his introduction of Search Engine Optimization to yours truly. Granted I have learned a lot more since the time I picked up his first eBook from StomperNet and a few other resources – his direct impact to my success was unquestionably most important – it gave me understanding of SEO!

• Ken Evoy for really a multitude of the things I have learned from him but one, perhaps most important of them – allowing me to logically sort out all the knowledge I already had about web mastering and gain more details, I haven’t even thought of! While I have never personally purchased his Site Sell product, I have learned from eBooks I purchased and consider his services as some of the best that web has to offer!

• Doug Champigny for his marketing insights and never-failing friendship! Doug is one of the people who not only knows what he is doing but also has ability to allow you to see what you are not doing and should be! Knowledge Doug has shared with me through our communications can never be calculated in monetary value and I’m thankful to have a friend and a mentor like Doug!

There are many more people who could be added to this list and I’m incredibly thankful to everyone I’ve met who shared something with me, taught me or just pushed me in the right direction – be it willingly or by accident but today I simply want to highlight those who had most profound impact on me and my Internet Success!

I wasn’t going to write on this topic originally but for some reason my partner and I started to see this issue more and more often occurring:

Customer Makes It IMPOSSIBLE For Us to Provide Customer Service

While it can be due to many reasons, fact still remains and worst of all – it leaves bad impression on that person even though it wasn’t even our fault. Considering that we pride ourselves in providing great customer service to our clients – we are obviously not happy with situation either.

Let me give an example and a fix, that perhaps will apply to some people reading this post, especially if you have requested a support for a product and never got a reply…

Solution…

Yes, I decided to go backward and present the solution to the problem first as I think it is MOST important:

• Be sure you whitelist the support email address that you expect reply from
• Check your SPAM or BULK folder – you might find your reply there
• DON’T use email address that requires people to very themselves through Spam-Arrest or some similar service – you’d be AMAZED how many people do this one!
• BE SURE you can accept email on email address you send from – a LOTS of time inbox is too full and support gets reply back stating that person can’t accept any new emails
• Turn off any Out Of Office autoresponders, as too often they also auto refuse messages to be sent to your inbox
• Try writing from different email address if you didn’t get reply to your request!

Those are just some of the few solutions to problems like this one….

This morning I have received an email from a Free Member on Expert WordPress (I have protected some details for privacy):

I personally believe that 4 minutes to reply from the time problem was submitted is good but guess what…

Customer Never Got The Email!

Or so it seems in next message:

I have highlighted the response we get any time we attempt to email the person who is obviously upset and yet – I still don’t know if he was able to get into the system or not…

Case above is one of the less obvious as some email addresses we try to reply to simply BLOCK our replies, actively refuse to accept it and since person emailing for support never tries any other emails we can reply to – they never get answer from us.

Everyone Losses in this case!

1. Customer upset for not getting promised service
2. We are unable to give service and get tarnished reputation

Once again – this post is not meant to upset anyone but perhaps help some people understand why is it they never got reply from us!
